Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the number one cause of vision loss in adults over sixty and affects as many as 15 million Americans. The disease affects central vision, which is necessary for reading, watching television or driving. A major study conducted by the National Institute of Health in 2001 found that certain vitamins and zinc slowed the progression of intermediate and severe macular degeneration. Vision was improved with combining these nutrients with lutein and zeaxanthin. These products are highly recommended for patients with severe or intermediate AMD. However, no studies have been done which show benefit in preventing macular degeneration in patients with no or mild AMD.
